Editing Levels

There are two levels of editing:

Copy Editing

We ensure that all grammar, spelling and punctuation are correct. We ensure that the meaning of each sentence is clear and that terminology is used consistently. We ensure that page layout is consistent and correct. Copy editing is carried out against a standard style guide.

Substantive Editing

This is a deeper form of editing, in which we address the fundamentals of the document. It includes audience, purpose, structure, selection of information, tone, use of graphics, and options for layout. It usually involves interaction with the writer, and may involve rewriting. Substantive editing also includes all aspects of copy editing.

The two levels of editing are not exclusive; different sections in the same document can require different levels of editing. We make it clear to you in our quotation what levels of editing we propose to carry out. Substantive editing takes longer than copy editing, so there is a difference in cost.

If your company has a style guide, we edit against that document. If you do not have a style guide, we would propose editing against an industry-standard style guide.
